When I tell people that I’m involved in this years Restyle Campaign and I’m blogging exclusively for the RSPCA, I usually get a blank stare back. What do you mean RSPCA? You’re shopping in a pet store?
Well the truth is that I didn’t realise the RSPCA had op shops either. There are 4 Society Stores around Perth which sell a combination of clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, antiques and other second hand items.
I was lucky enough to take a tour through the RSCPA Care Centre in Malaga last week, I met some of the amazing rangers who dedicate their lives to helping animals in need, and of course, I got to snuggle some four legged friends. I also got the chance to hear about how all proceeds from the four Society Stores go towards helping disadvantaged and abused animals that the RSPCA works so tirelessly to take care of. That includes all medical costs, food, blankets and rehabilitation costs.
While I was at the Care Centre I got to speak with Tim, Media and Communications Manager and Clare, Marketing Coordinator. They told me the heartbreaking but uplifting story about Trevor, an 18-month-old white Staffordshire bull terrier cross that was found in an suburban backyard. Trevor was not only starving and seriously underweight, he was also deaf.
Within two weeks of being in RSPCA care, Trevor had gained 3.5 kilos and was well on the way to recovery. Now he has been re-homed into a loving family, weighs a healthy 20.6 kilos and is undergoing specialist training with RSPCA involving the use of hand signals and other specialist techniques.
Trevor the dog’s story is just one of hundreds of cases of horrific cruelty and neglect the RSPCA investigates each year and that is why the charity needs the support of the community. As well as funds generated from the Society Stores, RSPCA’s annual fundraiser Cupcake Day, is designed to help raise much-needed funds to help dogs like Trevor lead a fulfilling life.
The concept is simple – during the month of August you can hold a cupcake day event at your workplace, at home or with your friends with every dollar going to help animals like Trevor. You can register online at www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au.
The Care Centre is also in desperate need of newspapers, shredded paper and blankets to help with the large number of animals currently in care. These can be dropped at the RSPCA Care Centre in Malaga and if you have any queries please call RSPCA staff on 9209 9323.
